Rabbit Vaccinations

Vaccinating your rabbit is an essential part of keeping them safe and healthy. In Australia, the primary disease we vaccinate against is Rabbit Calicivirus Disease, a rapidly fatal illness that poses a serious risk to both pet and wild rabbit populations.

What is Rabbit Calicivirus Disease?

Calicivirus is used by government programs to control feral rabbit populations and is regularly released into the environment. It spreads through:

  • Direct contact with infected rabbits
  • Biting insects (e.g., mosquitoes and fleas)
  • Contaminated food, water, or surfaces

This makes even indoor rabbits vulnerable to infection.

Vaccination Schedule

We use the CYLAP® vaccine, which offers protection against Rabbit Calicivirus.

  • Young rabbits can start vaccinations from 4 weeks of age in high-risk situations.
  • A follow-up dose is given at 10 to 12 weeks of age.
  • Ongoing protection is maintained with booster injections every 12 months.

Your veterinarian will recommend a tailored vaccination plan based on your rabbit’s age, lifestyle, and risk factors.

Why Vaccination Matters

Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe illness or death if your rabbit is exposed to the virus. While no vaccine offers 100% protection, vaccinated rabbits are much more likely to recover and experience milder symptoms.

Regular health check ups, good hygiene, and mosquito control all play a role in keeping your rabbit safe.
