Desexing Your Pet
Desexing is a routine procedure recommended before your pet reaches maturity. It helps prevent unwanted litters and certain health issues, while also supporting better long-term behaviour and wellbeing.
At St George Vets, we strongly encourage desexing for both cats and dogs. The ideal time for the procedure is usually around six months of age, before your pet reaches sexual maturity. Desexing not only helps manage the pet population, but also reduces the risk of certain cancers and infections, and can help minimise behaviours such as roaming, spraying, and aggression.
What to Expect
Desexing is a day procedure. You’ll be asked to drop your pet off between 8am and 9am, with no food after 9pm the night before. In most cases, your pet will be ready to go home after 3pm the same day.
Our experienced vets perform both castrations (males) and spays (females) with the highest standard of care. During the procedure, your pet is placed under general anaesthetic and is supported with intravenous fluids throughout. We use intradermal (under the skin) sutures, which help reduce irritation and prevent your pet from chewing or scratching at the surgical site.
Your pet will also go home with appropriate pain relief, and our team will provide clear aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.
