Endoscopy for Pets

At St George Vets, we offer advanced endoscopy services to help diagnose and treat a wide range of internal conditions, quickly, accurately, and with minimal discomfort to your pet. Our clinic is equipped with both flexible and rigid endoscopes, allowing us to examine different areas of the body, including the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tracts.

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a long, thin camera (endoscope) inserted through a natural opening such as the mouth, nose, or rectum. This allows our veterinarians to view the internal surfaces of organs and tissues in real time, often without the need for exploratory surgery.

Expertise You Can Trust

Our practice owner, Dr Shelton Smith, has completed postgraduate training in endoscopy and brings years of experience to every procedure. His skills, combined with our state-of-the-art equipment, enable us to provide precise, advanced diagnostics with minimal impact on your pet’s comfort and recovery time.

Your vet may recommend endoscopy when less invasive diagnostic methods, such as X-rays or ultrasound, aren’t able to provide enough detail. It is particularly helpful for evaluating:

  • Chronic vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent coughing or nasal discharge
  • Suspected foreign body ingestion
  • Suspected tumours or ulcers
  • Biopsy collection for diagnostic testing

What to Expect

Endoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your pet is calm and pain-free. During the procedure, your pet’s vital signs are closely monitored by our trained staff. In many cases, endoscopy not only allows us to see what’s going on, but also to take biopsies or remove foreign objects at the same time, making it both diagnostic and therapeutic.

Safe, Effective, and Minimally Invasive

Compared to traditional surgery, endoscopy results in less post-operative discomfort, shorter recovery time, and lower risk of complications. It’s a valuable tool for improving your pet’s diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
